HELP US BUILD OUR BUTTERFLY GARDEN AND BE A PART OF THE EXPO!
Time to get the creative juices working and create your own masterpiece….we can’t wait to see what you come up with! When it comes to this type of project, you’re only limited by your imagination and your own brand of creative inspiration!
Celebrate four fabulous decades with us at our spectacular 40th Anniversary extravaganza! Join the fun by channelling your inner artist and create a magnificent butterfly that will take centre stage at the event. Let your creativity soar and be a part of the dazzling display that will help make our milestone celebration unforgettable!
What will you do to make your butterfly special? The Queensland Garden Expo is always looking for ways to create colour in the garden and lots of colour could be what makes your butterfly stand out. What will make your butterfly pop? Consider using materials found in nature…seeds, pods or leaves could have an impact. Why not look around the house to see if there are any discarded items that could have a second life on your creative design…used cable ties, milk bottle caps?
A couple of things to note…
- Your butterfly may be displayed outside it is worth considering some sort of waterproofing eg. clear varnish coating.
- Butterflies will be hung upright so cannot be extremely front or top heavy.
- All designs must use the butterfly blank supplied by the Queensland Garden Expo.
All entrants will receive a free ticket to the Queensland Garden Expo and there will be prizes awarded in each of the following categories.

WHO CAN BE INVOLVED
The short answer is anyone! Previous competitions have seen the below groups engage with the competition:
• Any keen gardeners!
• Schools
• TAFE Colleges
• Garden clubs
• Nurseries
ENTRY FEE
All participants will be required to pay a $10 Entry Fee to enter the Wings of Imagination Competition.
WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE
All participants will receive the following for being part of the Wings of Imagination Competition.
One (1) 330mm wide (approx) Wooden Butterfly blank to decorate (Click here for image)
(All designs must use the butterfly shape blank supplied by the Queensland Garden Expo).
One (1) Complimentary Single Day ticket to any day of the Queensland Garden Expo (available on delivering your decorated butterfly to the Expo)
STEPS TO TAKE PART:
1. Entrants register participation by completing application form above. A $10 payment for the wooden butterfly blank is required on collection.
2. Entrants will be required to collect their flower shaped blank to paint / decorate from the Nambour Showgrounds on either Thursday May 16 between 12pm and 4pm or Friday May 17th between 9am and 1pm. The blank will be approx. 400mm x 400mm in ply. Wooden blanks will not be delivered to any participants.
3. All completed entries must be returned for installation to the Nambour Showgrounds on Monday 1 July or Tuesday 2 July between the hours of 10am – 4pm. On return of the completed butterfly one Adult ticket to the Expo will be given to the entrant.
4. All entries will be installed throughout the Showgrounds on the 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th July 2024, and judged by an independent panel of judges on Thursday, 4 July 2023.
PRIZE MONEY
Prize Money will be awarded to 3 entries as listed below:
- Most Creative Butterfly: 1st Prize $150 / 2nd Prize $75
- Best Use of Recycled Materials: 1st Prize $150 / 2nd Prize $75
- Best 40th Anniversary Celebration themed: 1st Prize $150 / 2nd Prize $75
JUDGING
All butterflies on display will be judged by an independent judging panel and winning entrants will be advised via email / text. Payment will be made to the winning entrants via pre-paid Visa Card.
BUTTERFLY COLLECTION
If you wish to collect your butterfly, these can be collected at the conclusion of the event (Monday 8th July or Tuesday 9th July between 9am – 1pm).
